Red dye 40 and the News

Today I am finding the latest news videos regarding artificial dyes to be added to my blog.
Today I stumbled across a video and I was excited to see the word getting around. During the video, there was a short segment where a Pediatrician was asked about artificial dyes. The Doctor seemed to be very skeptical of the affects of red dye 40. Unfortunately the Doctor did not see the latest revision to the American Academy of Pediatrics (see my link) nor was she aware that the FDA has not done tests to insure that Red dye 40 can cause neurological changes which in turn can lead to adverse behavioral changes. Parents are the ones who have to advocate for their children, regardless of what your Doctor may not yet know. Here is the video that I was referring to.

  1. Great Clip! I wish there were more. I've heard that The Doctors did a show on food dyes earlier this year, but I missed it. I'd love to see that one.

  4. I really do appreciate this blog! My son's OT also suggested cutting out red and yellow dyes. His ESE Pre-K teacher believes he has ADHD and should be medicated. He just turned five. So I'm trying to experiment with absolutely everything else before turning to medication.

Imagine my surprise when his behavior changed almost instantly. Now, don't get me wrong, we have a long way to go, but.... Unfortunately he's extremely picky, so that's a whole other story!

Just last week his behavior began going gown hill again and I came to find out that my parents were giving him fruit snacks that contain the artificial flavors, etc. (We buy the Brach's Motts). Do you have any other suggestions for a type of fruit (snack) that I could give him? He refuses to eat real fruit right now - we're working on it!
    Thanks so much, Amber

  5. Amber,
I am so glad that you found my blog! Have you ever tried the fruit snacks in the baby/toddler section? I just ran out so I can't check on the exact name. I think Gerber makes them. They have no artificial dyes or artificial flavors! They still have color - natural color from beet juice etc.
I am going to create a section on food suggestions real soon! :)
As far as the ADHD, we are working on that part as well, but without medications. Children with ADD and ADHD are more susceptible to the effects of artificial dyes - not every child experiences the severe behavioral changes that we do, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it does no harm to them neurologically. More needs to be researched on this. My children are not taking medication. There behavior is not an issue - being artificially dye-free. We give our children vitamins L'il Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish (Brain Boosters)and sometimes Gummy Vites - Make sure that your child is not getting too much of one particular vitamin (you might want to vary the days and check with a pediatrician). Omega vitamins are good vitamins for the brain. I have more work to do on the focus and handwriting part, but as far as behavior - your teacher is going to love your new child without dyes! You will have to try to keep your child dye-free at school as well. Invite your child's school to my site and you might be able to help at least a few more children! :)
Please let me know how you are doing. :)

  6. Our family suffered unknowingly for ten years from the effects of food dyes and artificial preservatives in our son's diet. Everyone to whom I have spoken that has made the change has shown the same dramatic results. You all know the same things. I am now speaking at local PTA meetings and "new mothers support groups" to spread the word immediately and I urge you all to do the same. I simply share my firsthand account, supported by the few facts my pea-brain can hold and then refer them all to Feingold, CSPI and the rest of the internet universe. EVERY person I talk to about the food dyes seems to be hearing this information for the first time. I have many "new best friends" because people are soooooo grateful for this information. It is NOT commonly known and I believe that we can empower families to improve their situations overnight without waiting for the FDA. It will be years before any action will be undertaken by them and that will be years of suffering for millions of people.

  7. Thank you Bishop for your comment. Through my research, I realized that this has been known by many parents around the country for years. I will do everything I can to try to reach out to as many people about the harmful effects of artificial dyes and preservatives. I also contact companies and ask them if they offer alternatives while sharing the information that I have about what I know. Many parents are furious when they find out that their child's behavior was caused by those things and that they were not informed - as I am sure you were after unknowingly suffering for ten years! I think we can make a difference right now. Thank you again for your comment.
